Description

The Church of St. John is a church built in 1838, with later additions in 1861 and 1882. It is constructed of limestone rubble with limestone dressings in the earlier sections and sandstone dressings in the later chancel. The tower is pebbledashed and the roof is slate. The church features a nave, a chancel with a steeper roof pitch, and a north aisle with a pitched roof.

A tower rises above the west wall, topped with a projecting battlemented parapet. The west wall contains a doorway flanked by buttresses, featuring a pointed head and a hood mould with a square section. On either side of the doorway are lancet windows, also with hood moulds, and there are buttresses at the corners of the wall. Above the doorway, there is a string course and a first-floor window with a pointed head, drip mould, and wooden Y-tracery.

The south nave wall consists of five bays separated by buttresses, each bay containing lancet windows and a continuous drip course of square section. The east bay has been reconstructed with sandstone dressings. The chancel features two paired cusped lights in the south wall, while the east wall is supported by three large buttresses and has a three-light window with intersecting tracery and trefoils. The east wall of the north aisle has windows with two cusped lights and a trefoil, mirrored by a similar window in the west wall. The north wall contains four sandstone lancets, each with hood moulds.
