Description
The Quaker Meeting House, originally listed as Friends Meeting House, was built in 1692 and underwent alterations in the mid-18th century. It features roughcast rubble walls and a slate roof, and is a single-storey building with a gallery. To the left of the porch, there are two sash windows with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds that have narrow cyma mouldings. To the right of the porch, there is a fixed window with one rebated and chamfered jamb. Above this window is a rebated and chamfered surround that once framed a two-light window, which now provides light to the gallery. The porch has gable coping with kneelers and an outer chamfered doorway with a segmental head inscribed with the date '1692'. Inside the porch, the two inner doorways have chamfered surrounds and doors with raised and fielded panels. The right-hand gable, which is partly obscured by a modern extension, features a projecting stack with moulded weathering. The rear (north) wall has two windows and a doorway, all with plain reveals. The interior includes raised and fielded panelling and an eastern gallery with a panelled front. This building is an early and complete example of a meeting house in the north of England.
