Description
The Manor House, built in 1681, is a Grade II* listed house located on Slyne Road in Slyne-with-Hest. The structure is made of cobble with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. It has a T-plan layout with a central entrance and gable stacks, standing 2 1/2 stories tall with a symmetrical five-bay front.
The house showcases rebated and chamfered cross windows with continuous drip courses on both floors, along with three 2-light rebated and chamfered mullioned windows in the attic. The deep moulding of the door jambs extends around the shaped lintel above the entrance, which has a plaque reading 'CGM 1681' (for Cornelius and Mary Green) positioned above it. The drip courses extend beyond the windows on the return walls.
On the south gable, there is a 2-light rebated and ovolo-mullioned window on the ground floor, with a blocked cross window above it on the first floor. The gables feature copings, shaped kneelers, and stacks with weather offsets and moulded copings. The rear wing contains several similar windows, including one with four lights and another with ovolo mullions. The west wall of the wing has a doorway with moulding that continues around the shaped lintel. A chimney is located on the front of the house.
Inside, the south front room includes a moulded stone mantel, panelling, and a court cupboard marked 'CG 1681'. The north room features raised and fielded panelling with fluted Doric pilasters flanking the fireplace and a round-headed cupboard, although the upper doors are missing. The rear wing has an open well closed-string staircase with square newels and turned balusters. In the attic, there are upper crucks with carpenter's marks.
