Description
The Tonnage Warehouse is a mid-18th century warehouse located on St George's Quay in Lancaster. It is constructed from squared coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof that has a gable facing the road, with a projecting verge over the central three-quarters of its width. The building measures approximately 15 meters deep and has a facade that is about 6 meters wide. It stands four storeys tall above a cellar.
The right side of the facade includes a doorway, alongside a central loading slot that has a plain surround, as do all the openings. Each floor is flanked by a 12-pane window, although originally these were masonry panels with a ventilation slot. The top floor does not have an opening on the left side, likely to strengthen the wall next to a crane that has since been removed. On the ground floor, the left-hand window space is occupied by the doorway, which is accessed by external stone steps. The loading slot features doors on each storey, with the doors on the ground and second floors being partially glazed. The warehouse was built on Plot 23.
