Description

No. 23, St George’s Quay is a house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of sandstone, squared and dressed into large stones, with ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof. The house follows a double-depth plan and has a facade featuring chamfered quoins and two bays closely spaced. Windows are later 20th-century timber casements with simple stone surrounds. A blocked cellar opening is present in the left-hand bay, while the right-hand bay has a projecting trap door set between stone reveals at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. Four external stone steps lead to a recessed door with a glazed panel above four raised and fielded panels. Chimneys are situated on the left and right sides. The property was built on made-up ground behind the quay wall. The left-hand gable wall appears to have subsided shortly after construction, which is particularly noticeable in the window lintels which are not horizontal.
