Description
Cawthorne's Endowed School is a late 19th-century school building, possibly designed by Douglas. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building is single storey and has two projections on the south side; the right-hand projection has a gabled roof while the left-hand projection is smaller with a hipped roof. The windows have elliptical heads, and to the right of the right-hand projection is a large eight-light window with mullions and a transom, while a similar window is located to the left. The front wall includes two two-light mullioned windows, and the left-hand projection has one two-light mullioned window. There is a door with a chamfered surround in the right-hand return wall of the left projection, and the right-hand projection features similar doorways in both return walls. The main building has a stone bellcote on the right-hand gable and a chimney with twin octagonal shafts on the left-hand gable. The left (west) gable wall displays a stepped eight-light mullioned and transomed window, with pointed heads on the upper lights.
