Description
Clarkson's Farmhouse is a house dating from 1680, with later alterations. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The house follows a three-unit lobby-entry plan, with three bays across the front. A single-storey gabled porch is situated between the first and second bays. The windows are largely modern or sash windows, with plain reveals, except for a three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window located to the right of the porch. Above this window is a section of a continuous drip course. A small, one-light chamfered window is positioned to the right of the second bay on the first floor. The outer porch doorway has plain reveals, while the inner door has a chamfered surround with a shaped lintel inscribed 'RCA 1680'. Chimneys with brick caps are located to the left of the porch and on the right-hand gable. The wall above the first-floor window sill level incorporates more red sandstone, implying a possible raising of the eaves level. Inside the middle room are two axially placed main joists that are chamfered with run-out stops. These are accompanied by a boxed firehood bressumer and a spere with chamfered and stopped heck post. A recess in the rear wall is believed to be a blocked fire window. To the right of the modern fireplace, a spice cupboard with a door dated '1681' is said to exist, although it is currently inaccessible due to furniture.
