Description
The former station building and lighthouse, now used for fish storage, is located on Marine Road Central in Morecambe and dates back to the early 1850s, with the lighthouse added shortly afterwards. The structure is built from coursed squared sandstone and features a slate roof. It is a single-storey building with a roof that overhangs on the north-east side, creating a canopy over the entrance. The door and window openings have painted stone surrounds, and the windows are fitted with external shutters. There are windows between the four doors, with two additional windows to the right and paired window openings between the first and second doors.
Early photographs indicate that the facade remains relatively unaltered, aside from some enlargement of window openings and the removal of chimney caps. The left-hand gable wall facing the land has two window openings separated by a central mullion. The right-hand gable wall features two doorways and two windows, which are partly filled with masonry. The south-west wall, near the edge of the jetty, has six windows with stone surrounds, two of which have central mullions dividing them into two lights.
Adjoining the west end of the building is a lighthouse with a square base that transitions to an octagonal tower made of rock-faced sandstone. The walkway connecting the lighthouse to the station building is treated as a moulded capital and is topped with iron railings. The lantern of the lighthouse has a white-painted ogee cap with a finial. In 1852, a goods warehouse and crane were constructed on the jetty, authorized by the North Western Railway Act of 1852, which facilitated a steamer service to Peel and northern Ireland.
