Description

A pair of cottages on Main Street, Warton, were built in 1752. The left-hand cottage is of limestone rubble, rendered on the exterior, while the right-hand cottage is of limestone rubble with sandstone dressings. They have a slate roof and gable stacks. The cottages are double pile and two storeys high with attics. Directly in the centre are twin doorways, each with a simple stone surround. The windows are chamfered with flush mullions. The left-hand window on the ground floor is a former two-light window, with the sill lowered and a mullion removed. To the right (No. 63) is a three-light window. On the first floor, the left-hand window is two lights, and the right-hand window is three lights. Above the doors is an oval plaque with a carved border bearing the inscription 'J D 1752.' The right-hand gable has two two-light windows, and a chamfered one-light attic window. The gables feature coping and kneelers. Originally, the cottages were undivided on the first floor, suggesting they may have been built as a single house with a separate workshop entrance on the ground floor.
