Description

St Mary's Church is a parish church built between 1894 and 1896, designed by the architectural firm Paley, Austin & Paley of Lancaster for Mr. William Sharp of Linden Hall. The church is constructed from coursed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and has plain tile roofs. It features a two-cell plan, a small vestry on the south side, and a gabled porch on the north side, all in the Gothic Revival style.

The north front includes a pointed arched doorway to the right, which is sheltered by a timber gabled porch. To the left, there are two three-light segmental arched windows with pointed lights and hood moulds. Further left, the chancel has a smaller single two-light segment arched window. The east end of the church showcases a broad three-light segment arched window with pointed lights and a hood mould.

On the south front, there are three pointed three-light segment arched windows, each with three pointed lights, serving the nave. To the right, a projecting vestry features quoins and a parapet, with a two-light flat-headed mullion window on each face. The chancel to the right has no windows.

Inside, the church boasts a moulded ashlar chancel arch with angels at the impost level, as well as high-quality, elaborate timber roofs. The interior includes a Perpendicular style reredos, timber pews, choir stalls, and an octagonal pulpit. Additionally, there is a brass lectern and a brass chandelier located in the chancel.
