Description

A farmhouse built in 1679, alongside a barn, stands in Caton-with-Littledale. The farmhouse is constructed from rough, unsquared rubble stone with a roof of stone slate. It originally comprised three rooms, arranged over two storeys and four bays wide. The windows are rebated and chamfered with mullions. On the ground floor of the left-hand bay is a window with plain reveals, and above it is a former four-light window where only one mullion remains. The second bay has two-light windows; the third bay contains one formerly four-light window, now with one mullion missing; and the right-hand bay contains a five-light window on the ground floor and a former four-light window above, also missing a mullion. A modern porch sits in front of the entrance door on the left-hand side. A second door, protected by a gabled porch with a moulded surround and battlemented lintel inscribed "TTE 1679", is located between the third and fourth bays. A section of a drip course remains on the front facade, returning on the east gable wall. There are chimneys between the first and second bays, and on the right-hand gable, the latter projecting with offsets. A blocked two-light window is visible on the ground floor of the right-hand gable. An outshut projects from the rear of the house, featuring mullioned windows of two and three lights. The barn, positioned to the left of the farmhouse’s front facade, has a wide entrance with a segmental head. To its right is a single-light, chamfered window, followed by a door with plain reveals and a chamfered lintel. Inside the barn are two hardwood trusses that include tie beams and unusually high light collars.
