Description
The ash plant in Carnforth, built in 1939 for the London Midland Scottish Railway, is a Grade II* listed structure designed for handling ash produced by steam locomotives. It is constructed of reinforced concrete and features mainly steel mechanisms.
The design consists of a mass concrete tower that spans a standard gauge railway line. The main body of the tower serves as a hopper, which is intended to discharge ash directly into wagons positioned on the tracks below. On the eastern side of the tower, there is a pit for the ash bin, which remains in place along with the mechanism used to raise the bin up the tower to empty it into the hopper. The control cabin is located at the top of the tower.
