Description

Nos 1 and 2 Hagg Cottages and Hagg Farmhouse is a farmhouse with two adjoining cottages located on Hagg Lane in Carnforth. The farmhouse dates from the 18th century, with some elements from the 17th century. It is built of rubble and has a slate roof, featuring a T-plan layout with a central entrance, end stacks, and a stack on the gable of the wing. The building has two storeys and an attic.

To the left of the entrance door, there is a four-light chamfered window typical of the mid-18th century, with flush mullions. Flanking the door on the first floor are two similar two-light windows. On the ground floor to the right of the door is a six-pane sash window with plain reveals. On the first floor to the left of the door, there is a one-light chamfered window from the 17th century. The door itself features chamfered jambs and a triangular head inscribed 'IL AL 1638'. The right gable is pebbledashed and has a two-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window on the first floor, along with an attic window with plain reveals.

The rear wing has a rebated and chamfered surround on the first floor of its south wall. The north wall of this wing features a former four-light rebated and chamfered window with one mullion on the ground floor, a four-light chamfered mullioned window of 18th-century style lighting the stairs, and a similar three-light window on the first floor. Inside the farmhouse, there is a moulded shouldered fireplace from the 18th century in the left-hand room.

Hagg Cottages are likely a 19th-century conversion and have openings with plain reveals. No. 1, to the south, has two bays with a modern window to the left of the door. On the first floor, there is a double sash window with glazing bars to the left and a single sash with glazing bars to the right. No. 2 has a sashed window with glazing bars on each floor, with a door to the left, while No. 1 features a chimney on the gable.
