Description

The engine shed for steam locomotive stabling and servicing was built between 1940 and 1944 for the London Midland Scottish Railway.

The structure features a reinforced concrete frame finished in brick, with roofs covered in modern sheet material. It is a rectangular, six-road through-running shed that has a modern extension to the north. Attached to the east side are original buildings, including a machine shop flanked by stores to the south and offices to the north, with staff rooms located to the north.

The exterior has a utilitarian design, with concrete lintels over the openings. The shed has raised brick parapet walls that conceal a low-pitched ridge and furrow roof, which is partially glazed for top lighting. The six-bay machine shop is constructed of brick and has a gabled roof. The ancillary buildings to the north and south originally had flat roofs but now feature modern, shallow pitched lean-to roofs.

Inside, the shed retains standard gauge tracks and full-length inspection pits for all six roads, with the eastern-most road also equipped with a wheel drop. The machine shop to the east contains a wheel lathe served by a travelling crane that crosses the eastern-most road. At the northern end of the ancillary range, there is a sand drier and store.

Additionally, there are subsidiary items such as the ash and coal plants, the water tower, and the wagon repair workshop, all of which are separately listed. Directly associated with the engine shed, but not separately listed, is a 70 feet diameter (approximately 21 meters) vacuum-operated locomotive turntable supplied by Cowans Sheldon of Carlisle. Adjacent to this turntable is a timber shed, which is also shown on the 1950 survey plan.
