Description
The former signal box at the north end of the platform at Carnforth Station was opened on 30th January 1882. It is constructed of coursed York stone with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys. The west wall includes three blocked chamfered windows on the ground floor, topped by a corbel table. On the first floor, there are three mullioned and transomed windows with pointed heads. The gables have copings, with the southern gable featuring a round decorated chimney cap on an octagonal base and a blocked shouldered opening on the ground floor. The first floor also has a central round decorated panel, likely once housing a clock, flanked by double chamfered windows. Above this is the weathering for the station canopy that once connected to the signal box. The east wall mirrors the west wall in design. The north gable has a chamfered door surround on the ground floor and an eight-light mullioned and transomed window with pointed heads on the first floor, although two of the upper lights are blank. Above this window is a panel displaying the carved coat of arms of the Cavendish family, accompanied by the motto 'Cavendo Tutus'. The signal box was closed on 22nd October 1903.
