Description
Rough Heys Farm Cottage is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been partially altered or extended in the 18th century and is now divided into two dwellings. The building is constructed of coursed thin sandstone rubble, with some areas rendered, and features a stone slate roof with a ridge chimney and chimneys on two gables. It has an L-shaped plan consisting of three bays, with a rear wing attached to the first bay. The cottage is two storeys tall, with a small single-storey extension at the right end.
A prominent feature of the cottage is the two-storey gabled porch in the center, which slightly overhangs the upper floor. The porch has large quoins and a doorway with quoins offset to the right. Above the doorway is a datestone inscribed with "W" (for James and Ellen Walmesley), "I E 1706," and a stepped three-light stone mullion window with a stepped hoodmould. To the left of the porch, there is an oblong window with two stone mullions, and above this are two casements with glazing bars, separated by a stone mullion. To the right of the porch, the third bay has been altered, featuring a moulded doorway next to the porch and an obliquely splayed right corner.
The rear wing has tall coupled windows with chamfered heads and hoodmoulds. The interior has not been seen. The cottage shares a farmyard with Rough Heys Farmhouse.
