Description

This is a row of eight early to mid-19th century cottages located on Clifton Street in Lytham St Annes. The cottages are constructed with painted pebble-dash render, likely over brick, and have sandstone dressings, topped with a slate roof and brick chimneys. They have a double-depth plan, with each cottage being single-fronted. There are three prominent, projected double porches to the front, and single porches at each gable end, along with some rear extensions. The architectural style draws upon 17th-century vernacular traditions.

The row appears as a low, symmetrical range of eight windows. Gabled porches with finials are present at numbers 6/8, 10/11, and 14/16, each featuring two-light mullioned windows. The side-wall doorways also have chamfered surrounds, with original board doors preserved at numbers 10, 12, 14, and 16 (the others have been altered). The roofs have projecting eaves and verges, along with apex finials. All cottages feature three-light mullioned casement windows (the glazing has been altered in most cases), and all openings are topped with stone labels. Four ridge chimney stacks are visible. Gable walls include gabled porches with finials. These cottages represent one of the earliest examples of housing built on the Clifton estate in Lytham.
