Description
This is a terrace of six cottages on Westby Street, Lytham, built in the mid-19th century and subsequently altered. The construction varies; numbers 57 and 59 have scored stucco, while the others have roughcast render over brick, all painted white. The cottages have sandstone dressings and a slate roof with brick chimneys. They follow a double-depth plan, with each cottage having a single frontage. Entrances are located in the gable ends of numbers 51 and 61.
The cottages present an 11-window, two-storey facade, with two windows per cottage except for number 61, which has one window at the first floor. A large, central gabled porch serves numbers 55 and 57, with a steeply pitched roof almost reaching the eaves of the main range. This porch contains a two-light mullioned window, and side-wall doorways are topped with stone lintels, all beneath a steeply-pitched roof with projected eaves and verges. Numbers 53 and 59 have flush doorways and gablets above the windows. Number 51 has a six-light mullion-and-transom window on the ground floor, with two cross-windows above, and number 59 has similar fenestration. The other cottages have altered windows. A gable-end porch is present on number 51.
The cottages represent a good example of housing developed on the Clifton estate in Lytham. They are part of a group of six similar blocks along Westby Street and are included on the list for their contribution to group value.
