Description
This is a former Congregational Sunday School, now used as a meeting room, built between 1861 and 1862 by W.F. Poulton of Reading, with a later addition. The building is constructed of rock-faced yellow sandstone with some red sandstone dressings, while the north gable and west side are of red brick. It has a slate roof with fishscale bands. The design is in the Early English style.
The building has a rectangular single-cell plan, with a small, parallel porch at the south-east corner, and an annex on the west side. The gabled porch has a two-centred arched doorway on its north side, featuring a moulded surround including a nailhead band, and a polychrome extrados band which intersects and runs out to the gable coping. The east side has three cusped two-centred arched windows with polychrome extrados bands. The south gable wall has three stepped cusped lancets, with a two-bay continuation beyond, topped by a parapet. The north gable wall also has three stepped lancets and an extension. The interior has been altered and now includes a small stage.
The Sunday School, together with the nearby Lytham United Reformed Church, forms part of a complete set and sits within a group that also includes the Police Station and Library opposite.
