Description

Knowsley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1673 on the east wall. It has been altered, damaged by fire, and renovated, and is now used as a house. The building is constructed of colour-washed brick and features a steeply pitched thatched roof trapped between crow-stepped gable parapets, with a ridge chimney. It has a two-unit baffle-entry plan and is two storeys high. The former front on the east side, which faces the garden, has altered openings with three windows on each floor, mostly large casements with glazing bars. At the first floor level, there is a datestone inscribed with "WB" (William Bottiler) above the position of the original door, which is now blocked.

To the left, there is a single-storey extension from 1673, said to have been servant accommodation and is now a kitchen. The right gable features large modern casements on each floor. The rear, which is now the present front, has an inserted door to the right flanked by small windows, topped with a thatched canopy. Above this door is a similar window, and in the left bay, there is only a stairlight and a small window under the eaves.

Inside, the housepart contains two ovolo-moulded beams, one with an inserted partition beneath it, both with concealed stops. In the service room, there are two chamfered beams, one with two cyma stops. The farmhouse is said to have been built for Thomas Bottiler, whose son William married the daughter of the Earl of Derby.
