Description
This building is a row of four former almshouses, originally six, constructed in 1841. They are made of dressed stone with a plinth of large blocks, and the sides and rear are of random rubble. The roof is slate and features seven chimneys with two flues each. The structure has a long rectangular plan and is two storeys high, with a single-pile layout and a continuous single-storey outshut at the rear.
Each of the four houses has one bay, with doorways located on the left and one window on each floor. However, the first and fifth doorways have been replaced with windows. The doorways have plain stone surrounds, and the doors for numbers 3 and 4 are studded and fitted with long fleur-de-lys headed hinges. All windows consist of two round-headed lights.
Prominently displayed at the center of the first floor is a large stone tablet set in a moulded frame, featuring incised lettering that reads: "These six Cottages were Erected AD 1841 By Susanna Daughter and sole Heiress of Peter Brooke of Astley Hall in the County of Lancaster Esqr; for the benefit of Poor Persons, Natives of, resident in, and belonging to the Township of Chorley."
