Description

The stable block attached to the west end of Cuerden Hall dates from the early 19th century and has since been enlarged, now serving as offices. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features hipped stone slate roofs. The building has a large U-shaped plan consisting of three ranges, which have been enclosed by later additions to create a square courtyard.

The stable block is two storeys high, with outer walls topped by a high parapet that has stone coping. The front (north) side includes, between brick pilasters, coupled round-headed entrance arches, with the right arch leading into the courtyard. Above these arches, the parapet is ramped and features pilaster strips that enclose a stone shield displaying three animal heads with daggers in their teeth, along with an apron. The left return wall of this range mirrors the brick pilasters and ramped parapet, which contains a clock face at the center. The courtyard side has a hexagonal ogee-capped bellcote on the roof and a wagon door to the left of the entrance arch.

The courtyard wall of the east range, which steps back at the left end, has eight tall windows with splayed brick heads, alternating with lower openings that were originally doors; however, the second to fifth openings have been altered to create square windows. At the right end of this range is a high segmental-headed recessed bay. The south range features three adjoined wagon doorways with gauged segmental brick heads. The east range of the courtyard, which aligns with the outer wall of the other ranges, includes a mid-19th century iron and glass roof supported by latticed girders on cast iron Corinthian columns.
