Description

Brown House Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dated 1697 on the lintel and enlarged in the 18th century. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof featuring gable copings and kneelers, along with brick chimneys. The building has a two-bay end-baffle-entry plan with a shallow rear outshut to the first bay, which is now covered by a full-width double-depth addition built at right angles.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with a high chamfered plinth. The doorway at the right-hand end, aligned with the gable chimney, has a moulded surround. The moulding on the lintel steps over a square recess containing a "4-leaf clover," and the hoodmould runs out to the left over a recessed 5-light mullioned window that is missing two mullions. Above the hoodmould over the door is a recessed decorated datestone inscribed with the letter "R." The first bay features a recessed 3-light mullion window inscribed "R G 1697" with a hoodmould, and on the first floor, there is a similar 2-light window above the door, along with two other windows, both retaining a chamfered flush mullion.

An added chimney is located at the centre of the ridge. The left gable wall has an altered window with remnants of a hoodmould at ground floor, and above it are two and three-light windows, both with hoodmoulds, although the former is missing one mullion. A modern lean-to extension covers the junction with the rear wing, which has altered flat mullion windows on both floors on this side, possibly indicating it was formerly a loomshop. On the other side, there are two doors and two windows at ground floor, with altered flat mullion windows above.

Inside, the building has been altered, but the front part of the first bay, which was the former parlour, retains one stop-chamfered beam.
