Description
The Croston War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1920, with additions made for the Second World War. It is constructed from granite and features raised metal lettering.
The memorial has a two-tier base topped by a tapering plinth, which supports a shaft and a wheel cross. Both the shaft and cross are adorned on the front (west face) with a carved Celtic knot design and the dates of the First World War, 1914 and 1919. At the base of the shaft, there is a dedication that reads: "IN/ IMPERISHABLE/ MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ OF CROSTON/ WHO MADE THE/ SUPREME/ SACRIFICE/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 'THEIR NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE'." The names of those who fell are inscribed in recessed panels on the sides of the plinth. Additional plaques have been affixed to the base to honor the Fallen of the Second World War, including a dedication on the west face that states: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN/ HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS," along with the names on the side returns.
