Description
The Rectory, dated 1722 on the downspouts, is a building that incorporates earlier elements and has been altered over time. It is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a three-span stone slate roof. The layout is approximately rectangular, formed by three parallel ranges with gables at the front.
The building stands three storeys high and has an almost symmetrical seven-bay facade designed in a baroque style. The central bow is flanked by wings that have Dutch gables on the outer slopes. The central panelled door is framed by an architrave supported by Corinthian semi-columns and topped with an open pediment that contains a shield featuring a bishop's mitre and the inscription "FORTITER ET FIDELITER." Above the door, there is a 12-pane sashed window with an architrave of Corinthian pilasters, a consoled sill, and a dentilled cornice. The bow features curved, segmental-headed windows that are similarly sashed, except for the second floor, which has a central 9-pane sash and painted 6-pane blind windows on either side.
At the corners of the wings, downspouts with ornamental rainwater heads are supported by brackets inscribed with the year 1722. The left wing has a narrower gable than the right, with both wings featuring two segmental-headed 12-pane sashes on the ground and first floors. The left wing has one square-headed window on the second floor, while the right wing has two small segmental-headed 6-pane sashes. A horizontal parapet with moulded coping runs around the bow and extends to the apexes of the gables, concealing the gables of the facade, although their line is marked by a surface strip.
The return walls and rear of the building have windows that match those at the front. The gable of the west wing is taller than the others, which have hipped roofs. The building features ridge chimneys.
Inside, there is a three-bay Corinthian screen leading to the entrance hall, which boasts a coffered ceiling. In the east wing, there is a room with a similar ceiling and full-height wainscot made of fielded panelling.
