Description

A row of eleven cottages dating from around 1820 to 1830, built for the Lowerhouse Mill by Dugdale, and subsequently altered. The cottages are constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with stone slate roofs, except for number 6 which has a modern tile roof. Brick chimneys were added in the late 19th century. The cottages are arranged in a long, rectangular double-depth plan, with each having a single frontage. They are two storeys high with one window each. Doorways are located to the right of numbers 2, 4 and 6 and to the left of the others, all with simple surrounds, some featuring chamfered lintels, and doors that have been altered. Windows at numbers 2, 10, 14 and 22 have raised sills and plain reveals; those at numbers 4, 6, 8 and 16 have flush sills and plain reveals; and those at number 20 have raised surrounds, with all windows now featuring altered glazing. The cottages have ridge chimneys. The interiors have not been inspected. They form part of a largely complete early 19th century industrial settlement at Lowerhouse, grouping with numbers 217-227 Lowerhouse Lane and numbers 204-238 Lowerhouse Lane.
