Description

The Chaffer monument, located approximately 12 meters south of the Church of St Peter, is a monumental headstone and enclosure from the late 19th century. It commemorates various members of the Chaffer family, including Daniel, son of Thomas and Sarah Chaffer, who died in 1845 at the age of 1; Sarah, who died in 1846 at the age of 31; Ann, the second wife of Thomas, who died in 1864; Eliza, the third daughter of Thomas and Sarah, who died in 1869 at the age of 27; and Thomas, who died in 1876 at the age of 69. The monument is made of finely dressed sandstone and is designed in the Gothic style. It features a very large headstone with cinquefoil panels on both sides and crocketed corner pinnacles. In front of the headstone is a rectangular enclosure surrounded by low walls with mouchette tracery. The monument is part of a group that includes the Waddington monument to the north, the Kay monument approximately 20 meters to the south, and the Church of St Peter.
