Description

A row of 18 cottages, Nos. 204-238 (even numbers), built around 1820 to 1830, originally for the Dugdale’s Lowerhouse mill and subsequently altered. Nos. 218 and 220 are now a shop. The cottages are constructed of watershot coursed sandstone, with stone slate roofs (Welsh slate to Nos. 222, 228 to 232). They have a long, rectangular double-depth plan, each cottage being single-fronted. Each cottage is two storeys high, with one window. A continuous square-cut gutter cornice runs along the top. The doorways are on the right, each with a plain surround but a chamfered lintel, except at Nos. 218 and 220, where the surrounds have been altered. The doorways to Nos. 234 and 236 are lower than the others, with recessed, altered doors and overlights. The windows have raised sills and rectangular lintels, and now have altered glazing. Corniced stone chimneys are on the ridge, except for No. 204, which has a cut-down gable chimney, and No. 206, which has an altered chimney. The interiors have not been inspected. The row forms part of a relatively intact early 19th century industrial colony at Lowerhouse and is a group with Nos. 2-22 Lowerhouse Fold opposite.
