Description
This is a row of six cottages built around 1820 to 1830 for Dugdale's Lowerhouse mill, although they have been altered over time. The cottages are constructed from watershot coursed sandstone, with Nos 219 to 223 painted. The roofs of Nos 217 and 219 are made of stone slate, while Nos 221 to 227 have Welsh slate roofs. Each cottage has rendered brick chimneys. The layout is rectangular and double-depth, with each cottage being single-fronted and two storeys high, featuring one window each. They have a continuous square-cut gutter cornice, with doorways located to the right of each cottage. The doorways have plain surrounds and altered doors. The windows have raised sills and rectangular lintels, but all have altered glazing. Notably, the windows at No. 221 have been modified to have widened openings with 20th-century bowed glazing. There are ridge chimneys, and the left gable is coated with pitch. The interiors have not been inspected. This row of cottages is part of a relatively intact early 19th-century industrial community in Lowerhouse, forming a group with Nos 204-238 across the street and with Nos 2-22 Lowerhouse Fold to the right.
