Description
The Standish Pillar War Memorial is located in the center of a small triangular garden, which was established to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The garden also features the Grade II-listed Jubilee Drinking Fountain. The memorial is constructed from polished red granite and consists of an urn atop a squat column, resting on a square three-stage stone pedestal that is set on two steps. It stands just over 2 meters tall. The front of the pedestal has an inscription that reads:
(upper stage) STANDISH/ WAR MEMORIAL./ 1914-1919.
(middle stage) THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE
(lower stage) SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939-45/ ROLL OF HONOUR
The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth.
