Description
The gatehouse to the Church of St. Wilfrid, built in 1927 by Austin and Paley, is a two-storey stone structure located on the north side of Market Place in Standish-with-Langtree. It features a small lean-to bay on the left side and an octagonal turret on the right. The cornice is adorned with carved bosses representing cardinal virtues, and the embattled parapet is decorated with projecting angels that symbolize biblical virtues.
The entrance is Tudor-arched, with continuous moulding and enriched spandrels that include a rose and pomegranate design. The front facade has a canted oriel window with a 1:2:1-light configuration, showcasing cusped lights and a frieze decorated with a carved harp, fleur-de-lys, and trinity fishes, all beneath a hipped roof. A small light with a label is present in the lean-to bay. The turret includes an inset war memorial plaque and the Standish arms, with a cornice and top panelled sides featuring mullions and transoms, as well as cusped panels and leaded lights.
The rear of the gatehouse is similar to the front, featuring a statue in a niche with a nodding ogee over the arch, flanked by buttresses and two mullioned windows with two lights on the left. The lean-to bay has an elliptical-headed entrance. Inside, the entrance passage contains an inscribed frieze and memorial tablets.
