Description

The obelisk located adjacent to the south-east corner of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Atherton Market Place was erected in 1781, likely for Robert Vernon Atherton. It was restored in 1867, and the shaft, which primarily dates from that restoration, features sunk panels on each face. The obelisk stands on a rusticated pedestal and stylobate. It marks the site of a former ancient fair and continues to serve as a prominent focal point in the area.
