Description

Chanters Farmhouse is a 17th-century house located on Chanters Avenue in Atherton. It features a T-shaped baffle-entry plan, constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys, with a three-storey crosswing and a two-storey porch. Notable architectural details include quoins and a gabled crosswing that projects from the first bay, which has five-light double-chamfered ovolo-moulded stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds on each of its three floors. One of the quoin stones is inscribed with "17 PCM 23," possibly indicating the date when the top storey was added to the crosswing. The second bay contains two similar windows, while the third bay features a porch with a coped gable and kneelers. Both the inner and outer doorways have heavy ovolo-moulded timber jambs, and the original studded door remains intact. The porch includes a three-light mullion window on the first floor and an oculus in the gable. The left return has one, two, and four-light windows, while the right return has four arched and two circular lights. The rear of the building is rendered and includes a small 20th-century addition, along with a brick gable chimney stack.

Inside, the house features a large inglenook fireplace with an ovolo-moulded bressumer beam. The similarly moulded floor beams were shortened when a staircase was added. The principal first-floor rooms also showcase ovolo-moulded beams, built-in panelled oak cupboards, and several original doors. Chanters Farmhouse is a fine and largely unaltered example of 17th-century domestic architecture.
