Description

Ena Mill is a cotton spinning mill, originally built for mule spindles in 1908 by the architects G Temperley & Son from Bolton. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring stone and buff terracotta dressings, with iron or steel girders supporting concrete floors. It is oriented east to west.

The mill has five storeys, with a two-storey carding room that projects to the south. There is an external engine house with a rope race leading to the end wall of the mill, along with an adjoining boiler house and stack located to the southeast. A stair and sprinkler tower is positioned to the northeast. The structure has twelve by nine bays, with the long elevations displaying three windows per bay, each separated by shallow pilaster buttresses. The lintel level features plain buff bonding, and the top floor has cambered window arches. A low parapet is raised over the central bay, and the tower rises two storeys above this level. The show front on the north side includes a central window at each stage, adorned with variously treated entablatures, and a segmental pediment above the mill's parapet. There are three round-headed windows beneath the parapet, complemented by low corner turrets. The engine house has tall round-headed windows with glazing bars, while the boiler house features low parapets. The stack is circular in section, topped with a moulded and panelled cap.

Inside, the mill features circular section columns with simple shaped capitals. Ena Mill is a well-preserved example of a late Edwardian mill, originally lit by electricity generated by its own dynamo. It was designed to accommodate 87,072 mule spindles and 12,880 ring spindles.
