Description

This is a large, 18th-century town house, now incorporated into a hotel along with the adjoining building at number 138. It is constructed of handmade red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a sandstone plinth and dressings, and a slate roof. The building follows a double-depth, double-fronted plan, with a 20th-century extension at the rear.

The exterior is symmetrical, featuring a three-course plinth, rusticated quoins, and a modillioned eaves cornice. A central entrance is reached by six steps flanked by curved stone walls, leading to a doorway with a shouldered architrave, a keystone, a later panelled door, and an overlight with geometric panes. The windows are 12-pane sashes, with shorter, square-paned windows on the second floor; all are set within moulded architraves with keystones and moulded corbels supporting the sills. A rainwater head to the left of the centre bears the raised date "1755" and a monogram. Original iron railings sit atop a stone plinth in front of the entrance steps.

Attached to the left gable is a two-story screen wall and archway built from similar materials. It features panelled pilasters, framing a tall, elliptical wagon archway with a rusticated surround and keystone, and a keyed oculus above. A moulded cornice with a blocking course finishes the archway.

The interior was not inspected but is noted to contain features of interest, including a staircase. The building forms a group with the adjoining properties at numbers 134 and 138.
