Description
Morley's Hall Barn is a farm outbuilding that includes a threshing barn, an attached byre with an overloft, and a lower ancillary range to the south. It was built in the early 19th century, with some near-contemporary additions and 20th-century alterations. The barn is constructed of red brick, laid in English garden wall bond, and features a slated roof with diminishing courses.
The west elevation consists of four bays across two storeys, with the southern bay being an addition. There is a recessed entry bay in the two-storey section, which has a brick panel above boarded, ledged, and braced double doors that include a segmental relieving arch. On either side of the doorway are decorative ventilation panels with a reel pattern. The added two-storey bay to the south has a single doorway and a taking-in door above. There is also a half-width single bay lean-to against the south gable, and behind it is a three-bay ancillary range that features two ground floor doorways and a flight of stone steps leading to a first-floor doorway at the south end, which also has a full-height lean-to against the south gable.
Inside the two-storey range, there are massive roof trusses that combine king and queen post construction, with the king posts being double-shouldered to support two tiers of diagonal braces. These trusses support lapped double purlins and a ridge purlin. Overall, Morley's Hall Barn is an exceptionally large and well-detailed example of an early 19th-century threshing barn.
