Description
Peel Hall is a house located on Peel Lane in Tyldesley, originally built in the 16th and 17th centuries but largely rebuilt in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The structure is made of English garden wall bond brick, which is now painted, and features a slate roof. It has an H-shaped, two-storey plan with a large 19th-century wing added to the rear left. A projecting stone plinth from the earlier building is visible, along with a continuous brick band on the first floor. The symmetrical elevation has four bays and a central entrance, which is adorned with fluted Ionic columns and a flat hood. The gabled crosswings in the first and fourth bays are concealed behind a stepped 19th-century parapet. A distinctive feature of the house is the Colonial-style loggia created in the 19th century between the crosswings, supported by two-storey high cast-iron fluted Ionic columns, which is also present at the rear. Of the eight windows, only one retains a 16-pane sash; the others have segmental or flat brick arches or stone lintels, along with four 20th-century bow windows to the right. Inside, the hall features chamfered beams, some with stepped stops, a vaulted cellar, six-panel doors, and a staircase with double-square newels that have sunk panels and cappings, a massive moulded handrail, and turned balusters on a closed string. The site is moated, with a history that predates the current structure; the earlier building was owned by the Canons of Cockersand.
