Description
Astley Vicarage is a vicarage built in 1704, constructed of English garden wall bond brick with a 20th-century tile roof. The building features a double-depth central-staircase plan, comprising five bays and three storeys. Its twin-gabled front elevation includes a central four-panel door framed by an eared and pedimented doorcase, topped with a four-pane overlight. The windows are symmetrically arranged, with four flush sash windows on the ground floor (featuring glazing bars only in the upper sash), five possibly original cross casements on the first floor, and four two-pane casements on the second floor. All windows are adorned with flat brick arches. The gables have round windows and an elaborate rainwater head. Each side elevation features a gable with a similar round window, a projecting chimney stack with tall paired shafts, cross casement windows, and two and three-light recessed chamfered mullion windows on the upper floors. At the rear, there is a two-storey lean-to addition.
Inside, the vicarage boasts ovolo-moulded floor beams in all principal ground and first floor rooms, a dogleg stair with a deep handrail, closed string, bulbous turned balusters, and square newels with clips. Original panelled and boarded doors are present throughout. This house represents an early attempt at classicism, having undergone little alteration since its construction. The blend of classical and vernacular elements enhances the building's architectural interest.
