Description
The Wellington Monument, located approximately 170 meters east of Bispham Hall, is a Grade II listed structure built in 1815. This monument honors the Duke of Wellington and the victors of the Battle of Waterloo. It is constructed from stone and features a square plinth topped by an obelisk with a ball finial. The monument includes inscriptions in both English and Latin on the cornice and base of the plinth, as well as on oval panels on the sides, which list the victorious generals. The front inscription reads: "TO THE/MOST NOBLE AND ILLUSTRIOUS/ARTHUR/DUKE OF WELLINGTON/AND THE BRAVE HEROES OF BRITAIN AND THE CONTINENT/WHO UNDER HIS AUSPICIOUS GENIUS AND COMMAND/SO GLORIOUSLY ACCOMPLISHED THE DOWNFALL OF/TYRANNY AND THE RESTORATION OF LIBERTY TO EUROPE/ON THE PLAIN OF WATERLOO/JUNE 18th AD 1815."
