Description

The former canal warehouse adjacent to the coal wharf on Manchester Road in Altrincham dates back to 1833, as noted on the keystone. This three-storey brick building features stone dressings and has asbestos and slate roofs. It has a square plan and includes an opening for a branch of the Bridgewater Canal.

The façade consists of five bays with a stone plinth, eaves cornice, and parapet. The central bay is slightly advanced and features a pediment with a circular opening that is now blocked, along with a moulded surround, rusticated quoins, and rusticated voussoirs with a keystone above the now-blocked two-storey high barge entry. A Venetian window with a dated keystone is also present.

On either side of the central bay, there were originally six semicircular-headed brick arched openings with stone sills, but none retain their original glazing. Two openings on the left side have been removed to accommodate a cast iron stair. The left side elevation has seven similar arched openings and previously included two full-height loading bays with hoist canopies, one of which has been blocked. The rear of the building features a pediment over the central two bays and retains six arched openings on the top floor. There are 20th-century additions to the right, left, and rear that are not of special interest.
