Description

The gatepiers and walls to Timperley Lodge were built around 1850 and serve as the entrance to the lodge. There are four gatepiers, each approximately 2.5 meters high, arranged in staggered pairs on either side of Claremont Drive. These pairs are connected by curved walls made of ashlar stone, topped with ashlar saddleback copings. Each gatepier features a tapered ashlar base that supports a square shaft with raised panels on each side. The top of each shaft is adorned with a bracketed and moulded cap, which has a segmental pediment on each face. The cap also supports the base and tapered stem of a spiked ball finial.

Historically, this gateway marked the main entrance to Timperley Lodge, a large detached villa from around 1850, which was created from an enlarged and remodeled house dating back to 1733. The lodge was set within extensive grounds in a largely rural area. Both the house and the entrance gateway are depicted on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1879. The grounds were developed in the 1920s, and the entrance gates remained in place until the Second World War. Today, this substantial gateway, consisting of four stone gatepiers and linking ashlar walling, is a notable and historic feature in a significantly altered suburban landscape.
