Description

The Railway Inn Public House is a mid-19th century establishment with later alterations, constructed from red and purple brick and topped with a Welsh slate roof. It features two ridge stacks with plain caps and clay pots. The street-facing side has two storeys and three bays, with an off-centre doorway to the right. The doorway has a moulded surround with a semi-circular arched head that includes an undivided fanlight, and it leads to a panelled door. To the right of the doorway is a single bay, while to the left are two bays, each containing stacked sash windows with two over two panes, set beneath shallow segmental arches. The left-hand gable sharply angles into the back.

Inside, the tap room and bar parlour are the main rooms at the front, separated by an entry passage, with the bar and a vanet located at the rear, along with living accommodation in the back range. The tap room, bar parlour, and bar retain 19th-century fittings, including a curved panelled bar counter with integral beer engines. Fixed benches are present in all bar rooms, and there are decorative fireplaces from the 19th century in both the tap room and bar parlour, the latter featuring a moulded surround and overmantle mirror. Picture rails, moulded skirting, and architraves are intact, with doors that have two raised and fielded panels on the lower part and glazed upper sections. The door to the bar parlour includes etched glass with the room title above pulvinated rectangular panes. This public house is a rare example of an unaltered modest interior, preserving its room divisions and original bar and bar-room fittings.
