Description
A bank and post office, dating to 1902 above the doorway and 1903 on the fireplace, designed by Thomas Worthington and Son. The building is constructed of ashlar, brick, and has a slate roof. It comprises four bays with a banking hall on the ground floor and wings extending to the rear of bays one and four. The ground floor is ashlar, with a semi-circular headed doorway to bay one, featuring a coffered soffit and an elaborate cartouche instead of a keystone. Raised lettering beside the archivolt reads "FORMERLY CUNLIFFE BROOKS & CO." Bays two and three have three-light window openings with stone mullions, semi-elliptical heads, and keystones. Bay four is similar but contains the Post Office shop front. Above a stone cornice, the upper storeys are recessed, incorporating stone quoins and an eaves cornice. Bays one and four each feature two cross-windows with architrave surrounds on each floor, while bays two and three have two-storey canted bay-windows with mullion and transom windows. An elaborate heraldic cartouche is positioned between the bay-windows, inscribed with the words "Finem respice." The roof has coped gables with kneelers, and two ridge stacks with stone bands and cornices. The banking hall contains a good coffered ceiling, a stone fireplace, glazed tiles, and decorative doors and ironmongery.
