Description

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene is a church built in 1874 by architects Wilson and Oldham. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a clay tile roof. The building showcases a wide nave with transepts and a chancel that includes an organ chamber and a south-east tower, all designed in the Victorian Gothic style.

The exterior includes a stone plinth, weathered buttresses, and a steep roof with coped gables and finials. The nave has four bays, with a porch in the first bay featuring an arched door opening supported by colonnettes, and the other bays contain three-light windows adorned with Geometrical tracery. The transept features a four-light window above a small porch and angled buttresses. The three-stage tower has set back weathered buttresses, an octagonal corner stair turret, two-light belfry openings, heavy octagonal pinnacles, and a spire with gabled lucarnes and a weather-cock. The chancel has two bays and a five-light east window.

Inside, the church features arch-braced roof trusses, an ornately carved chapel screen, a rood screen, and a pulpit. The chancel arch is supported by twin colonnettes, and the chancel roof is ornately painted. The interior also includes an alabaster and mosaic reredos, along with stained glass windows.
