Description

The Church of Saint Paul is a church built between 1883 and 1884 by architect H. R. Price, with a tower added in 1911 by Bird and Oldham. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The church has a nave with a clerestory, aisles, a south-west tower, and a north porch, along with a chancel that includes an organ chamber and vestry. It is designed in the Victorian Gothic style, characterized by a projecting plinth, a sill band, coped gables with corner pinnacles, and cross finials. The aisles contain two cusped lancet window openings in each bay and a weathered buttress. The clerestory features two-light windows with plate tracery. The four-stage tower includes an arched doorway in the first stage, a statue niche in the second, three lancets in the third, and a two-light belfry opening along with clock faces in the fourth stage. It is supported by weathered angle buttresses with gablets, topped with a castellated parapet and pinnacles, a pyramid roof, and a spike with a weather-cock. The polygonal apse has weathered buttresses and two-light windows with geometrical tracery, as well as a corbelled eaves band. The organ chamber is notable for its large roof vent. Inside, the church features a double-chamfered nave arcade supported by polished granite columns with moulded capitals and bases, king-post roof trusses, and a timber boarded roof. Additional interior elements include a polished marble font and pulpit, along with stained glass windows.
