Description
Nos. 20 to 23 and 23A Fairfield Square are a group of five houses originally built in 1785, which included a weaving workshop in Nos. 21 and 22. Constructed of header bond brick with a slate roof, the range consists of 13 bays and rises from 2 to 3 storeys in the central two houses. Each house features three bays and a central entrance. The doors are framed with eared architrave surrounds and have either flat hoods or pediments. The windows are 4-pane sash with stone sills and cambered brick-arched heads, while the second floor has casement windows. The buildings have an eaves cornice and ridge chimney stacks. No. 23A is accessed from the right side and has a brick with "IN 1785" moulded into its face. There are various outshuts and wings at the rear. This group of houses plays a significant role in the history of the Fairfield Moravian settlement, with the weaving activities being an important aspect of the community's economy.
