Description

South View is a house and former silk weaver's cottage, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with additions made in the early 19th century and the 20th century. It is now used as a training centre. The building is constructed of English garden wall bond and Flemish bond brick, with a slate roof. The original double-depth weaver's cottage has two storeys plus a basement and was extended by four bays in the 19th century and a further four bays in the 20th century.

A 5-light flat-faced stone mullion window is located in the basement, featuring a continuous stone head and sill, with semi-circular relieving arches above each light, recessed panels in the stone surround. Casement windows are present on the front, alongside a ground floor window with a central 1-light and a 3-light to the right, and a later bay window to the left. A similar 10-light window is situated on the first floor, with the central three lights being blind. The rear elevation has a basement door with 2- and 3-light windows either side, an 8-light ground floor window (three of which are blind and others are obscured by extensions), and a 9-light first floor window (four of which are blind). The relieving arches, a distinctive architectural feature, appear only on the ground floor front. There are two blocked attic gable lights. Chimney stacks have been removed.

Early 19th-century additions include a three-bay section with bay windows on the ground floor and sash windows on the first floor. A late 19th-century addition consists of a one-bay canted bay. A 20th-century extension is not of particular architectural interest. The interior has been significantly altered.
