Description
The Long Lane War Memorial, located on Wilmslow Road in Heald Green, Greater Manchester, is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War, with the date of these additions unknown. The memorial was crafted by the stonemasons Hilton of Manchester and is made of sandstone and brick.
The memorial features a rectangular, stepped obelisk that is flanked by low side walls. The obelisk consists of seven rectangular sandstone blocks, with the two lowest blocks projecting slightly to create a stepped plinth. As the blocks rise, they reduce slightly in width, culminating in a shorter top block that has a moulded cap. The block directly beneath the top block features a cyma recta moulding, and its front face is adorned with a relief-carved wreath. Below the wreath is an inscription that reads ‘TO THE MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF LONG LANE AND DISTRICT / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR’.
Two blocks on the obelisk are inscribed with the ranks, names, and regiments of 16 men, while the 17th name is inscribed at the top of the block that forms part of the stepped plinth. Beneath this name, the dates 1939 – 1945 are inscribed along with the ranks, names, and regiments of four men who died in the Second World War. The lower block of the stepped plinth bears the inscription 'HILTON / MANCHESTER'. The side elevations and rear of the obelisk are plain and unadorned.
Attached to the side elevations are two low brick walls topped with sandstone slabs. Each wall features a relief-carved stone wreath; the wreath on the left includes the date 1914, while the one on the right includes the date 1918.
