Description
The Goyt Aqueduct is a canal aqueduct that spans the River Goyt, built between 1794 and 1801 by engineers Benjamin Outram and Thomas Brown. It is constructed from ashlar, featuring both dressed and rock-faced stone. The aqueduct has three wide spans, each nearly 30 meters high, supported by large red sandstone pylons with semi-circular ends. These arches are separated by square battered antae that have moulded bases and capitals, creating a heavy band beneath the coped parapet walls. The parapets sweep out at each end, terminating in square piers. Each spandrel contains a pierced circular opening with ashlar dressings. Tension bars and plates have been added later as a remedial measure. On the south side, which serves as the tow path, the parapet is taller with rounded copings, and passing places are formed within the depth of the antae. This aqueduct is recognized as an outstanding example of engineering and design on a monumental scale.
