Description

The south portal of Woodley Tunnel, located on the Peak Forest Canal, was constructed between 1794 and 1801 by engineers Benjamin Outram and Thomas Brown. It is made of coursed millstone grit with an ashlar band, coping, and voussoirs. The portal features an almost round-headed arch that is slightly skewed. The tunnel itself is 176 yards long, with a concrete vault and towpath, and includes steel rails. This portal is one of three original tunnels on the Peak Forest Canal, with the north portal listed separately.
